When Ben catches Laura taking the apples

why did he speak to her in such a creepy tone even telling her they could make a "deal"? Wasn't that totally out of character for him seeing as he was genuinely a nice guy? Was that his idea of flirting?

reply

Come on!! It was so obvious he was just toying with her. He wasn't creepy at all.

Wanna make God laugh? Plan something.

reply

Ben probably thought he was being witty, but he was just creepy.

The novel portrays Ben as even more of a schmuck, he has a lot in common with Martin in fact. Except for the physical abuse.

The novel is very good & very different than the film, but it is also a terribly feminist almost anti-man tale. Nancy Price does not seem to like men much LOL.

"Penfold, shush."

IMHO the novel is not as good as the film (I read the book several times), because the old lady and the pregnant girl only divert from Laura's plight. They don't really contribute much.
Director Joseph Reuben must have thought so, too, because he deleted those two characters to focus more on Laura, Martin and Ben instead.

I prefer suspenseful movies with just a few characters, the less the better. For instance "The Little Girl who lives down the Lane" (Jodie Foster), "Dark Passage", "The Two Mrs. Carolls" and "Conflict" (all three with Humphrey Bogart), "My Name is Julia Ross" (Nina Foch) and "The Reckless Moment" (James Mason).

Yea...I know what ya mean! She was still in that defensive mode from her recent past, which is why she reacted that way. But, yea, it was still a bit weird to approach someone in that manner.

Do apples in Iowa really ripen in June? I didn't know that.

reply

Why do you say it is June? I always thought it was late July or August, due to the big parade they had in town, perhaps for July the 4th, or something else in late summer. I also think it could very well be closer to September, as you can clearly see leaves falling and Martin wearing his heavy trench coat in one scene.

reply

It appeared to be late August. Apples do not ripen until then.
The parade was likely for Labor Day.

I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.
Didn't he discover America?
Penfold, shush.

It appeared to be last August. Apples do not ripen until then. The parade was likely for Labor Day.

My thoughts too.

There's one scene right after Ben was finished dancing & singing with the scene from "West Side Story" in his backyard. Then the camera turns to Laura's bathroom window and you can see one or two red leaves next to the roof. I guess this was already taking place in the early fall.

reply

Ben was creepy but I never felt he was creepier than Martin.

Martin was a sadistic, wife-beating idiotic pig who felt he owned Laura.

I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.
Didn't he discover America?
Penfold, shush.

I'm the only one on this board who liked Ben!!!! 😭😭😭

I thought he was handsome, funny, and sweet.
.

reply

No, you are not the only one, I always thought he was everything you said, but I don't think he understood how abused she had been. As any normal man would have a problem imagining such a thing.

He was certainly the complete opposite of her 'husband', if he could even be called that.

reply

Maybe not handsome, but kind and sweet.

I laughed at that part because he thought he was being funny. I know so many people who try to always do stupid stuff like that. Ben was a nice guy but he sure was goofy and a complete whooseee. Nice job helping her out at the end Ben. Lol
