For me the best part is when they show the flashbacks showing her escape. Taking the swimming lessons, smashing the light (Where someone was mugged right there because that is the only dark spot. Good job Laura! LOL) swimming away from the boat etc etc. It's like I can watch the movie and then turn it off right after those scenes. Is that anyone else's favorite part? Or what is your favorite part?
The scene where she swims up to shore and the camera angle changes to overhead and you see the waves and foam in the water as she crawls out of it. I remember seeing that scene in the theater and it was a beautiful shot. Sort of Film Noir like. On the big screen it almost made you dizzy, which I suspect the director wanted, to give us an idea of how Laura was feeling at that moment.
The scene, although a bit cheesy, where she arrives in her new town in Iowa and the bus goes around the town square and all sorts of small-town americana is going on outside. Old guys talking, little kids playing. It's a beautiful little town and you can feel Laura's relief to be in a safe, happy place.
I love the entire movie but a very sweet part for me is when she is rocking in the swing on her front porch. I love the piano music that is playing, the soft glow from the setting sun, the neighbors in the background... she is, for once in a long time, content and unafraid.
I was just going to mention that scene too! She shows how relaxed she can be, at last.
The other scene that never fails to make me smile is when Laura goes to see her mom. The way her mom tells her that no matter what Martin or anyone does to her, no one can destroy her inner spirit. Great scene & music accompanying it.
I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus. Didn't he discover America? Penfold, shush.
The porch swing scene (the atmosphere is perfect small-town feel), the scene where she first sees Ben in his yard singing/dancing and where they dance around the theater.
I liked her dancing with Ben to contemporary music, swinging under the stars in the snow, the Ferris wheel and the picnic at night- all very sweet. It made up a little for the three years, six months and however many days she had to live with old Martin.
That flashback part is great. I think I love the ending when she tells the police to come quickly that she's just shot an intruder while Martin is still alive so he gets to hear that she intends to shoot him. Then it's goodbye Martin.
