Something that always bothered me...

I enjoy this movie. Guilty pleasure. But I was always bothered when towards the beginning, Martin comes back from town with a gift after beating Laura. When she sees it, her expression is one of genuine pleasure. I know that she was used to altering her reactions to keep him from realizing she was unhappy, but it bothered me. It was as though everything is fine with him beating her since he bought her a beautiful nightie.

No, she just didn't want yet another beating, which she surely would have gotten if she rejected his "peace offering".

Time of your life, huh, kid?

Exactly. Every emotion we see Laura show around Martin (except the sad, longing look she gives him as he walks away from her in the opening scene)is an act.
She isn't being herself, she's play-acting for Martin to keep him calm.

"I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus."
"Didn't he discover America?"
"Penfold, shush."

reply

She may be Play Acting now that she has a plan to leave. I am sure she willingly put up with his crap & thought it would get better in the beginning!

*NEVERMIND*

reply

I'm sure she 'play-acted' before she had a plan...once she 'learned' what would anger Martin & what would not.
Judging from the completely-trained robotic way Laura acted, combined with how Vanessa Shelly said Laura was covered with bruises when she knew her,
Laura took a while to learn 'how' to act & what to do around Martin.

Penfold, shush.

That was her face when he was looking at her. Don't you recall how quick it disappears when he turns away?

reply

He should have bought her a bandage and some Neosporin and some aspirin and a damn ice pack.

reply

It's a guilty pleasure for me too but I always took that as she was pretending to be happy so as to avoid another confrontation.
