Always something I wondered about

*SPOILERS*

One question I've always wondered: why would she put her ring in the toilet? She was so careful with hiding everything else. There was no guarantee that the ring would flush; but, then, why didn't he see it before? Did he never use the bathroom between the time she "died", and when he discovered it? There was a million and one places she could have gotten rid of it on the way~she didn't need to put it in the toilet. He would've discovered her secret anyway, but it was something that always bugged me.

Besides the necessary plot device (so Martin would know for sure Laura was alive) I think she acted impulsively.
She was disgusted with being 'trapped' by him, having his ring on her finger, that she literally 'flushed HIM'.

She was in a hurry so didn't likely think it wouldn't flush down (I would assume it wouldn't, but Laura wasn't exactly the brightest bulb or she wouldn't be in that mess lol).

As to why Martin didn't see it until then was a mystery at my own first watch, because the camera doesn't show us too much of the layout of their home.

But watching it again, I saw how Martin was ransacking everything looking for clues...and I realized that this was literally Laura's area of the home.
It was what they call a 'boudoir'.
Women used to have them; they're an area for dressing up & using the bathroom, literally.
So Martin most likely seldom if ever used that toilet until he cut his finger that night.

I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.
Didn't he discover America?
Penfold, shush.

Yea...but I always thought it was because they didn't live there year round. ...and yes I would have just taken the ring with me, and pawned it !! LOL

LOL women trapped in abusive relationships aren't bright LOL.

What do you suggest a woman should do, if a man suddenly starts beating her and saying he will kill her if she leaves? Have you seen the news? Women are murdered by husbands, ex-husbands and boyfriends all the time. Also she faked her own death in this complex way which seems pretty smart.

LOL.

That bugged me too. I was coming on here to say the same exact thing. lol

I agree. I would have just thrown it out the window on the bus out in a dumpster. What also bugged me was how he found the ring. I think usually when someone cuts themself the first reaction is to put your finger under the faucet. Who goes to the toilet to let your finger bleed? I know they had to do that so he could find the ring but come on. I thought that was stupid.

That part really is a bit daft. They should've thought of some other reason. What's wrong with him going to flush down a used handkerchief or something?

I'd have to watch that scene again to be sure, but I thought he may have just spotted the ring in the toilet as he was tending to his cut, then when he moved closer to the toilet, that's when drops of his blood fell in, not that he went to the toilet just to bleed into it seeing the ring only at that point. But I did think she planned everything else so well, surely she could have thrown the ring in her bag instead. That's what happened in the book, she took the ring with her. I still really liked watching this again on Netflix, I haven't seen it since 1991 and it really holds up well, I was expecting it to be cheesier but it is very tense in parts and well done in others. There's still cheese like some of the Ben scenes but that's okay, even they were a guilty pleasure. The scene on the bus when she's talking to the woman was really well done, I thought, one of my favourite scenes. And I loved the house she rented.

Their house was literally on the ocean so, why not chuck it out to sea?

Yea yea, necessary plot device and all that.

Like I mentioned, I also think it was humorous in being symbolic:

She's *flushing* Martin! 

You have to remember this is a fictional story, sure in real life a person doing the same thing might've made sure it flushed all the way down the toilet. But for entertainment purposes they wrote it this way. You could ask these kinds of questions about every movie ever made.

reply

Didn't somebody from her swimming class call her husband up and offer condolences? I thought the ring was a useless plot device. The call from the friend along should have been enough.

reply

Finding the ring confirmed it.
