Did the YWCA give her up?

It seems like he had accepted the fact that she was dead until the YWCA called him at work to give their condolences.

If only they just kept their mouth shut lol jk

I suspected that Martin had not 'truly' accepted she was dead just yet, judging by his reaction to the phone call.
He got a very 'hmmm let's see what this woman has to say' tone to his voice when he told his secretary to put the call through.

And an unmistakable look of 'relief' comes over his face when the woman initially says only '.....and we wanted to call & tell you how much we'll miss her.'

Martin apparently thought (or hoped) that the woman was calling to give him info on Laura being ALIVE somewhere!

Long story short...Martin was insane, but very intelligent in some ways. He was suspicious.
The call just confirmed his suspicions.

I guess it's because I have seen this movie so many times but am I the only one that laughs when the camera starts spinning around the room when the lady gives him the info he needed to confirm she was still alive? LOL maybe I have seen it so much that it's now become somewhat comical in some parts.

reply

she probably took some towels from the ywca.

it was time for payback.

The room spinning is still king of scary but I do find it a bit funny too.

reply

There is a scene in What Love Is with Cuba Gooding Jr where the camera does the same thing and I laugh every time I see it because it makes me think of SWTE.

reply

I think Martin's suspicions had already been aroused by things like finding the broken glass from the lamp along the beach and things like that. So in a literal sense, no, the YWCA did not give her up, it just confirmed Martin's suspicions, notice how he doesn't visibly freak out (that we see) but he instead heads off to find her immediately

Every man dies...not every man really lives...

reply

Actually he does freak out: he smashes his work phone with some heavy item.

If the YWCA woman had not called then he probably would have gone on wondering. The again the ring was what gave her awat. Still I feel like the YWCA woman calling randomingly the husband of someone at YWVA at his job was strange. She also kept giving out more information than she should have given. She just didnt know when to keep her mouth shut and was way too pushy. I can understand expressing your condolences but when the husband said no to something then it probably best to let it lie.

reply

the wmca told him she was a trained swimmer from lessons they provided, making him aware she probably didn't drown

reply

In the novel he starts an affair with that woman in order to try to find out more about Laura.

reply

I think he suspected it a long time ago by the walks on the beach and staring at the ocean. He can sort of feel something isn't right.

reply

The "phone call woman" always seemed to me to be making an attempt to jump on the opportunity to take Laura's place!

reply

Nutty men like Martin never give up, especially when they think a woman can't outfox them! I daresay a normal man would have accepted she was dead and looked no further :D

'is it loaded?' 'Of course not' 'BANG!!!"

reply

how did the Y know to call him? i doubt she had him listed as am emergency contact right?

reply

In the novel Vanessa Shelly says she sees an article about the death in the newspaper, complete with a photo of Martin & Laura together (wedding photo)
