Was Clarice and the other female agent involved?

I felt there was an implied lesbian thing going there, and I'm not being homophobic and please don't write the usual "It doesn't matter"... It does matter because Jodie and that girl are hot.

reply

Neither Clarice, nor Cordelia, were lesbians as far as I remember. And they certainly were not agents when the bulk of the story takes place.

Actually I studied English Literature at uni and did my dissertation on The Silence of the Lambs, and one of the critical texts I read about it addressed sexuality in the novel and the movie. The critic said that while in the book it was obvious Clarice was interested in men, in the movie it was ambiguous and one of the examples he cited was the way Ardelia and Jodie looked and talked to each other that could be seen as sexual interest.

reply

Sounds like that critic read far too much into it, too.

reply

I did feel a little vibe between them, particularly when they were in the cafe/bar (I can't remember), but it might have just been because I know Jodie is a lesbian so I read into it a little more, rather than it being part of the plot. I don't think it is intentional though, because her sexuality or relationships are not even looked at in the film.

I think they were just good friends and it looked like dorm mates. They've been through a lot together going through FBI training. They were rooting for each other. Helping each other study for their test.

reply

Absolutely not.

It's weird there's a topic on this, because in the one scene where they were talking face to face, there were multiple close ups and I noticed Jodie Foster's eyes sparkled a lot more when talking to her. Like someone said, maybe it's because I know she's a lesbian in real life, but she seemed to have a lot more chemistry with Cordeliea than any of the men in this movie.

reply

Aren't roommates usually close to each other emotionally?

reply

But it really doesn't matter. If that's how YOU want to interpret it, go for it.

reply

jesus christ, there is one of these threads for every movie...

reply

They probably had some chemistry, and certainly Ardelia (not Cordelia) is one of few people who treat Clarice as an equal rather than an underling, but they're roommates.

There's a scene in the book which is pretty funny when Clarice steps into the shower and ousts another of the girls who live in the dorm.
