In my humble opinion one of the best movies ever made!

Rocketeer is perfect in every way. I saw it in the cinema but as far as I remember, it wasn't an instant hit when it came out. It stayed in my memory though and every time I watch it, it never disappoints.

I don't remember it well, but I remember when I was a kid I was super excited to see it, and loved it, along with the Elijah Wood wagon movie

reply

Sure is. I like it better than the Indiana Jones franchise (which The Rocketeer is negatively compared to) and I just can’t say enough good things about it. Others may not think much of it, but for me this film is a glorious spectacle. Good not great? Great for me.

I have this movie in my collection, and consider it better than average, with quite a few moments of true greatness. Yet even if we overlook Lothar, the typical unstoppable henchman, the movie is let down by Disney not being sure who their intended audience was. Is this for kids, for adults, for comic readers, for pulp fans, or for average movie-goers just looking for light entertainment? In trying to please everyone, they ended up pleasing very few. Releasing it the same summer as Terminator 2 didn't help, either.

Nice summary!

It's a good movie, not great.

reply

Not one of the best movies I've ever seen but I still loved it.

reply

I've actually never seen this movie. When it sort of bombed at the box office, I thought it was likely not good but so many people that did see it have argued otherwise. Maybe it's time to check it out.

After 30+ years, it's still a far-above-average (yet not perfect) movie that holds up very well. If you like sci-fi/fantasy, comics, pulp serials, alternate histories, or late-1930s period-pieces, I recommend it very highly and hope you give it a chance.

reply

It's pretty good. That's all.

reply

It's enjoyable enough. Not brilliant but enjoyable, and Jennifer Connelly looks stunning in it. Shame she lost most of her hotness after the 90's.
