I had to go looking just to make sure that piece was real and ... apparently it is.

I still believe there are far too many properties that deserve to see big-screen action to just redo the ones we've seen, but at least Disney is paying this (possible) franchise some attention. It could mean one step closer to a half-way decent Blu-Ray release.
And I agree with this: "A good-hearted hero without Tony Stark’s billions of dollars or sarcastic, sometimes cynical, wit could be exactly what this generation needs in their idols."
Cliff Secord is just peculiar enough to be interesting amid the current field of marketable superheroes.

Well, if you want these lumps, you gotta put a ring on it. WHERE'S MY RING?!
Wait, so for years Disney treats THE ROCKETEER like the weird Aunt they keep hidden from the neighbors, and then all of a sudden they want to put a new dress on the broad and stick her out on the front porch in the middle of the day ?

Here's hoping they keep the action set in the 30s...That one's a must. Em Yoo Ess Tee.

I have to say that I am REALLY DISAPPOINTED. The original has such a "cult" fan following. It was made with "practical effects" rather than CGI and that's what people like about it! Plus, not only did I love Billy Campbell and Timothy Dalton--but the rest of the cast as well.
I am so sick and tired of remakes, especially when there's so much good original material out there that's overlooked.
There's a great article that Gavin Polone wrote a year or so ago that's fantastic! My friends and I had been saying the same thing(s) about remakes before we read his article.
Have you noticed that most remakes BOMB? But they keep making them anyway. And can anyone say that remaking "Dirty Dancing" is not blasphemy?
And can anyone say that remaking "Dirty Dancing" is not blasphemy?I can.
Well, here we are almost two years after the announcement and still no updates or even any rumblings. Maybe that was just a "testing the waters" thing to see if there was any buzz created (and there wasn't any).
Right now the comic book movie genre is at its zenith, and soon that hero bench is going to start looking mighty thin. Surely we'll get a new Rocketeer movie before they go to some C-lister like Ant-Man (2015). Oh, wait .
As long as they don't cast Zac Efron as Cliff! Hopefully they make it under their 'Touchstone' banner so they can have Betty Page in there, like the comic. The first movie is a loose adaptation of the first five chapters of the comic, so a sequel would most likely focus on 'Cliff's New York Adventure'
Though it could focus on some of the great short stories in the new Rocketeer adventures coming out now from IDW, which are set it during WWII. One thing I'm scared of is someone getting a hold of it and saying "I'm going to do this like Chris Nolan, because dark gritty and realistic sells". I really hate that. Nolan's style is so freaking boring, and it's, for some reason, all the rage right now for comic book films. It's fantasy, not reality. Let me forget about the troubles of the world for 2 hours.
I also really don't want them to do any major re-designs of the costume like they did on the new Spiderman, and the new Superman coming out next year. They make the costumes either to bulky, or too Power Ranger looking nowadays. Bale's Batman reminds me of the cheap costume on Bible-Man with Willie Ames. I would hope that if the rocketeer does get re-made correctly, and is a success, that it it will bring back that great pulp style that comic book films of the 90's had.So many recent comic book films have just left me cold, except for Captain America and The Avengers.

The trouble with setting it during WWII, is that people will call it a Captain America rip off.Yeah, they probably will (). But people still call Iron Man a Rocketeer ripoff, and that movie did okay.

Having seen both films, I can not see how anyone can say Iron Man ripped off the Rocketeer.Eggzactly!
The big problem with this is that Disney will try to change it too much to match the current superhero craze. The old film was an earnest attempt to bring Dave Stevens' work to life, and though the story was tweaked and changed here and there (sometimes at the behest of Disney who didn't want a Betty page style girlfriend in their family film), the film truly did capture the heart and soul of the source material. It is also well known that Johnston had to fight to keep the period dialogue in tact, as Disney feared that the current generation wouldn't understand what was going on. Another fact is that Disney wanted to get rid of the classic and distinctive helmet design, but those making the film again had a passion for the material and understood the importance of fighting for the things that would make the film a good adaptation. Will Disney be any better today, in this age where period pieces never fare well at the box office, or they have to have endless amounts of flashy CGI to grab the attention on the A.D.D. afflicted viewer? Will they actually hire someone who has a love for Dave Stevens work? Also worth noting is that Dave Stevens was on the set and was executive consultant. Now he is gone and won't even have a presence on this new reboot. I wish I could be excited for this, but I just don't trust these idiot studios anymore. I have zero faith in them to do anything more than play it as safe as possible. I also don't think this reboot will get us a better DVD of the old film. That is just wishful thinking.

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?
A reboot of the Rocketeer sounds good to me,and yes keep during WW2 period.
Yes I realize Hollywood makes alot of remakes, but this one does makes sense.
I totally disagree. It's completely unnecessary as the original holds up to this day and looks good for when it was made. There's nothing about it that cries "reboot needed", and I think remakes and reboots should only happen when a franchise or film has a decent concept at heart but delivers poorly. That is far from the case with The Rocketeer.
"Bulls**t MR.Han Man!!"--Jim Kelly in Enter the Dragon
It's been over a year now since this news broke. Has anyone heard anything new recently? I know Disney has its hands full with its Marvel and Star Wars empires right now, but you'd think there would be at least some movement re: this re-make/re-boot.
We have a new enemy. Fluke Skywalker...
Lots of things get announced and then fall off the radar. Another Disney property that was announced for a remake and then has been forgotten is The Black Hole. That guy from Tron Legacy was supposed to direct, but now it seems to have floundered. They get these ideas, but then the projects enter development hell. And really, it might be for the best that they remain there.

Yeah, we still haven't seen that Last Starfighter sequel that was promised back in '09. Sometimes these proposed re-boots come and go, other times they hang tough. They've been trying to re-boot the live-action Masters of the Universe franchise for the better part of a decade. Several directors have come and gone, and just as many scripts with them. Heck, it even changed studios in that time. But I was just reading yesterday that they're circling a group of potential directors for it. It just refuses to die.
He went to Bespin Luke Skywalker, but he left Hand Solo
And the one big reason that it refuses to die is that it can sell a lot of toys and cross-marketed tie-ins. Things like The Rocketeer, The Black Hole, and The Last Starfighter, not so much. They want a Masters of the Universe movie because so much comes with it. It was a proven hit back in the day and they think they can replicate that success and get more mileage off of it.

Disney is making the new Star Wars movie with mostly practical effects not CG.

I want more ROCKETEER
ROCKABILLY MONGOOSE!
Who are you?
ZERO! Ultraman Zero! Son of SEVEN!
But now that Disney owns it do you think its possible they might try to fold it into Marvel in some way? I mean the record for third party superheroes has not been so great... (Green Hornet, lone ranger, the spirit) in theaters so Marvel might be better for this sort of thing.
I mean the current superhero craze...I think for Disney it might be a good idea to fold this into marvel instead of leaving it with IDW honestly. I can see this working well with the Agent Carter period piece they got already.
