OP, stuff like this doesn't bother me, because on a whole the movie was very well done and nearly flawless in execution.
One might assume that even with the flames so close to his legs, that if he was in flight, that the wind would be able to create a less hot space between his legs and the flames. Or, one might just suspend their disbelief ;)
The helmet thing wasn't entirely fleshed out, and didn't need to be either. Yet another aspect that never bothered me.
I watched this again yesterday after not having seen it in years, and I only really noticed a few small flaws.
Two or three bad FX shots (two of them good for the time, but the death of Neville Sinclair being poorly done)
One minor continuity flaw during a quick edit, and that's really the only flaws I noticed.
It's by far Joe Johnson's best movie, and one of my favorite movies to this day!
