Was this movie ever popular?

I remember some of my friends watching this back in the 90's/early 2000 but it is pretty much forgotten about now. Was it ever popular? I only ask because up until last year I thought this was a pretty well known movie but it is so hard to find now and there aren't much reviews for it outside of this site.

Besides Titan A.E., I'd say this is the least well-known of Don Bluth's feature length films. In my experience, a lot of people who were kids in the 90s have actually seen it, but hardly anyone remembers it unless you physically show them parts of it. I've also noticed particularly that barely anyone is ever able to remember the what the title was.

I think it was one of those films that was rented frequently or seen at someone else's house (i.e. babysitters, daycare, what have you), and so people have memories of it, but very obscure ones. I saw it a number of times as a kid, but I don't remember having it on VHS like we did other non-Disney animated films, like Land Before Time, Balto, We're Back, etc.

That's just my experience, though.

Yeah, that's pretty much it. I don't think it deserves to be so obscure, it has it's problems obviously but I think the good outweighs the bad. Good music (not the songs, but the actual musical score), great animation, and an interesting villain are some of the things I like about it. The plot is mediocre but not terrible.

Just saw this film on TV and kind of enjoyed it--especially since the animation it was clearly hand-drawn and not computerized,so it had a freshness, a genuine sense of life in it that computerized films took a awhile to catch up to. It's definitely crazy and weird in some parts, but never less than entertaining, and I actually only got interested in it after catching a scene with the main villain (who was fun to watch) playing at a huge pipe organ looking like the Phantom of the Opera or something like that. I could tell it was a Don Bluth film by the naturalistic Disney-like style of it, which is what made me stay watching it. Never heard of this one either, but I kind of liked it.

I completely forgot about this movie until I was scrolling through Netflix and saw "We're back! A dinosaurs story" and got me thinking of other animated films from the early 90s. It took me a few minutes to remember the name, but about once every five years or so I find myself looking this up I would like to buy it and see if the nostalgia is worth while.

Yes and it's hard to find.

I don't hear anyone talk about this movie, I'm glad I was 9 years old in 1991 and remember watching this movie with my mom, dad, and younger sister and brother. I wish Walk Mart or some other videos stores would sell this in stores maybe amazon have it.
