wtf, what can that possibly mean other than crashing and burning?

It's like someone telling someone "break a leg."

As they say on several occasions, saying "good luck" is bad luck. Given the nature of what they're doing, saying "crash and burn" is about as far removed from "good luck" as you can get. As indecks said, it's like someone telling someone "break a leg."
