Did the Ending bother anyone else?

I just watched this movie after not having seen it since the 90's and while I absolutely enjoyed every minute of it, (even it's cheesiness) did anyone think that the conclusion to have them get along at the end was a little, disappointing?

I can see a movie where two kids were fighting could end like this, but this guy had already killed someone plus he was about to kill the referees AND Athena, why SHOULD he not get canned in the end? All of the sudden he decides to be a good guy? I don't know, I saw this guy going the way of Clarence Boddicker from Robocop, and it just didn't happen.

However, that is my ONLY gripe and it is small, everything else from the flick reminded me of watching even older science fiction. Lot's of fun not taken too seriously.

This is probably part of the film's cold war symbolism. These two men don't need to be enemies in the same way the US and then USSR didn't need to.

Alexander seemed pretty determined to kill or be killed, though. Even though that's hopefully now an actual rule in the game.

...besides he had "won" Alaska but nearly stomped Athena, the judges and actually did stomp the judges hovercraft. All of that forfeiting his win and giving Alaska back to the Market (US).

I'm sure that when he gets back to his homeland they are going to toss him in a goulg or under a jail somewhere, if not out right kill him.

BTW, Even though the title of this tread states it's about the ending, you should put [Spoilers] in it, just for the morons.
