It's actually one of my favorite methods of stylistic filming.
It’s a close-up using a wide angle lens which gives a distorted look. As you point out, it’s a very Raimi move. No reason why it shouldn’t be deployed here. Adds a ‘warped’ look to the Sheriff’s evil, black magic filled abode.
