What’s up with the extreme close ups of peoples faces?

Did Sam Raimi ghost direct some parts? Honestly it bugged me more than Costner’s accent

The closeup that stands out most for me was the shot of the sheriff’s cousin’s face when he runs him through with the sword.

I love close up shots.

It's actually one of my favorite methods of stylistic filming.

It’s a close-up using a wide angle lens which gives a distorted look. As you point out, it’s a very Raimi move. No reason why it shouldn’t be deployed here. Adds a ‘warped’ look to the Sheriff’s evil, black magic filled abode.
