shareAfter being shot he probably did not have the needed strength in his injured leg to even lift it up and put in on the floor. The books probably added the weight he needed to force his foot to land on the floor.

I posted a response to the OP. Let me now if that seems to be a more satisfactory answer. It's just an opinion, of course, since I don't actually know the answer but it seemed reasonable to me but I'd like to get feedback.

My take on that was it was his own form of physical therapy. While it was probably a little unrealistic in real life, I think the scene was intended to illustrate the extent to which a madman would go to physically rehabilitate himself in order to exact his revenge. In this case, his knee would not bend and without being able to bend, he would be at a disadvantage. By strapping the books to his ankle, he forced his knee to start bending. Having experienced physical terrory myself...I mean therapy...I imagine the pain would be excruciating.
