shareI loved the film, it terrified me a little bit. These are one of the reasons why I don't read the bible anymore, of course I stopped reading the bible a long time ago but nontheless this movie just proved my theory. Two words; religion overload, that is what that woman and her child were suffering from. All this teaching about end of the world etc etc is so frightening and that is suppose to be the teaching of God's love?
That is loony.
Tell that to the born-agains. There is a very profound POINT to this film that has flew over their self-righteous heads. They refuse to see what's so obvious.
This film is a work of art because it exposes Christianity for the twisted religion it is.
I think the movie is brilliant, and shows perfectly why I reject the whole notion of a judgemental & manipulative God, as shown in the Bible. No thanks! I do believe in God, but not THAT one....
shareReally belongs up there with Strange Cargo, Ninth Configuration, Last Temptation of Christ, The Sacrifice, Bad Lieutenant, and all the other Christian movies that Kirk Cameron would crap a truckload of bricks if he ever watched. (Well, most of them anyways).
shareI love this film also, but I'm not sure whether it comes out as pro-Christian or anti-Christian. I guess it depends on your own beliefs. I'm aiming toward the latter.
shareI'm an out gay agnostic who always felt Mimi Rogers' character defined my own doubts. (Though not my behavior--just cuz I'm gay I'm not a slut, you stereotypers you.) But I've loaned or recommended this film to evangelical Christian friends and they felt the movie raised fascinating, instructive questions about doubt while ultimately supporting faith. Which tells me that the writer-director did his Biblical scholarship--in fact one born-again friend said she was particularly impressed by that. At least two evangelical Christian friends I've recommended it to said they share it with congregation members--albeit only those very solid in their faith who wouldn't be shaken by it. (They thought it would be instructive and corrective to those people, as an illustration of how faith can "go wrong.")
shareThe perspective of your evangelical Christian friends makes me respect this film even more. And I am relieved to hear that evangelicals would see this as an example of how faith can "go wrong." Of course, maybe I'm guilty of stereotyping them in thinking they might not see the dangers of Mimi's character here (other than the fate of her daughter, of course). This film certainly raises issues of the dangers of extremes – both in sexuality and in theology.
