Is there a connection...?

I read the book awhile ago but I've always wonder what's the connection (if there is one) between the last name of the family Savannah wrote in her book (the Southern Way) and a football coach Tom mentions. Both names are McKissick. Can a connection be made or is it just a common last name?

No, it wasn't the name of one of the escaped prisoners. I don't remember their names but I'm pretty sure it wasn't. McKissick is the family name Savannah gives to the characters in the book she writes telling the rape story and it's later mentioned by Tom when he's saying something about football. It's supposed to be the name of a coach he could never beat.

I thought the name of the prison was Callanwolde.

The football coach McKissick is a nod to John McKissick the football coach at Summerville High School in Summerville, SC. He has been coaching there for over 50 years and is the winningest coach in all of football. I'm sure all high school football coaches in South Carolina worry about having to play his football teams, just like Tom did.
