I was glad he went back to Sally and his girls. Although he fell in love with Lowenstein, I think he did really love his wife and children. He just had a hard time dealing with the stresses in his life after Luke was killed. He did love his girls, and his wife because he did have tender moments in his letter writing to them (or at least to his wife). The issues from his past prevented him from expressing them.
What I wonder about is if after going back to the South - did he retell all the same things to his wife that he told to Lowenstein? Did he tell her all about the rapes, the killing and burial of the convicts, and the way he was told to keep quiet about it?
