One of the best movies ever.

No matter what others may say, I love this movie to death.
It's in a tie with The Bridges of Madison County for the best movie ever for me.
TPOT is a perfect movie about love in all kinds of ways; Love between parents and their children, love between siblings, love between lovers. This movie has it all, a lot of people don't see/realise that.
And that beautiful soundtrack. Some call it too cheesy, but I adore it. It's my favorite soundtrack. Some 20 years later, it still goes straight to my heart.

Streisand should have been nominated for best director and dare I say it? Should have won as well. She did a great job with this movie.

Yes! I loved it too!

I am watching it now, and have done many times. Love it.
Barbara and Nick look beautiful and do a great job.

The first time I saw it, it shocked me (the secret) more than most horror movies.
It still moves me after many viewings. Having said that, I don't think it is a man's picture. It's for women in my opinion.

I loved this movie as well, but the first time I watched it I was somewhat upset since it gave me flashbacks. My dad was a very violent alcoholic and he always made us kids watch him beat up our mom. How twisted is it to want an audience to your violence? Especially when the audience is young children. But I thought Nick was incredible, and the story while sad, really resonated with me. I usually always read the books first and find the books much better than the movies. I'm not sure I want to read this book - all the sordid details would be painful I think.

Thanks for sharing your story. The book is a masterpiece, but knowing your story after what you've shared I think you should leave it at the movie. The movie goes a lot deeper where the violence is concerned. I read the book because I was hoping for some more Tom & Lowenstein romance, but it's almost all about the Wingo family's background.

I think Nick Nolte said it well in an interview he did about a year ago, in that a director will tell the story that, in this case, she knows and understands best.

Streisand chose to make the film about a man and his relationships with the four women in his life,(his wife, mother, sister and lover). In contrast, Nolte when on to say that if Redford had directed the film, he would have centered the story around the two brothers.

I thought that was an interesting perspective.

I think Redford's version wouldn't have been the hit Streisand's version was/is.
Streisand stayed very true to the book and changed things for the better. In the book it was Susan who was the smoker, not Tom. But now it made more sense, that the more stress he got, the more he smoked. Susan's smoking didn't make much sense since she already knew how to handle her private life and stress.

I loved Pat Conroy's (the author of the book and screenplay) comment when he saw the movie that Streisand gave him the best gift he ever got, a better version of story.
And to be honost, she really did!

Agreed, one of the best love stories on film.
