Does anyone know if what happened to the town of Colleton in the Prince of Tides really did take place -- that an entire coastal town was relocated in order to install a nuclear weapons plant there?

shareYes & no. Pat Conroy borrowed the story of Ellenton (and New Ellenton) in Aiken county, where the Department of Energy's Savannah River Site was built in the 1950s. However, Ellenton was not a coastal town--it was next to Aiken, SC, and near Augusta, GA.
Exactly. Colleton isn't a town in SC, it's a county west and a little north of Charleston. Ellenton is about two hours from the coast.

I believe they did develop Daufauskie Island (SC) sometime in the late 80's or early 90's???
shareYes, but nothing was displaced on Daufuskie during the development process. Ironically, the island that did suffer a loss from this was nearby St. Simons Island, GA; the landmark Strachan Mansion was removed from there by barge and transported to Daufuskie to serve as the Clubhouse for the Haig Point Golf Resort.
