The heading says it all.... I can't begin to imagine why this film isn't ranked higher. It's touching, full of humor and filled with wonderful performances. Perhaps the blend of comedy and drama was difficult for some viewers to process? At any rate, I think this film is lovely, and I enjoy it everytime I come across it playing on TV.
The acting was very good in the movie, but there were several things that hindered my enjoyment of it.
The girl is so introverted she can barely speak during the first date, but she chats without any discomfort on the second date, and then sleeps with Candy on the third date. That is a fairly dramatic change in character and not too believable.
I've met some really rude, "tell it like it is" women in my life, but I have never heard anybody talk to people like the mother did in this film.
A realistic heart to heart talk after the blow-up at the house or after the break up the night before the wedding would have suited me better. Getting a ladder truck to go to her house and then getting a train to stop took me out of the moment because a cop can't do either of those things. How many more of those tricks can he pull out when they have their inevitable marriage spats?
I think an average grade for this movie is warranted. I'd give it a 5 only because of Candy and Sheedy's acting skills.
i 've watched this movie a dozen times I love JC and I agree she was kinda weird in the beginning but she warms up in the middle to the end.!!! loved this film. i love Maureen Jim and all the irish guys
