Almost a Sequel to 'The Quiet Man?'

I just read an article that says that "Only The Lonely" was originally supposed to be a psuedo-sequel to wonderful John Wayne/Maureen O'Hara film "The Quiet Man."

Logically, O'Hara would have played the older Mary-Kate Danneher/Thorton -- I imagine Wayne's character of Sean Thorton would be deceased.

I wonder why they didn't go that route?

Thank you, AJSeven. You're a real class act. By the way, that was sarcasm in case you didn't readily identify it as such.

To get back to the original post, I don't think so.

Rose is much more snippy and shrewish than Mary-Kate ever was.

I suspect they decided not to make any overt connections, because if they did, they would have to pay script royalties to the writers of 'The Quiet Man' (or their estates) for using the characters.

They certainly COULD have done it if they wanted to -- there's no reason 'Rose Muldoon' couldn't have been named 'Mary-Kate Thornton,' with a picture of the Duke on the living room mantel, etc etc.

But again it probably mainly came down to money, plus it made no sense as a 'sequel' other than the Maureen O'Hara characters would have the same name and act somewhat similar.

People would accuse Mary Kate of being unfaithful to Sean because really -- John Wayne as John Candy's father? No way!!!
