Excellent crime/thriller/drama with first rate performances from all involved. I always wanted to see it and finally caught it on cable.
There was not one scene that did not ring true.

It is a masterpiece indeed. I liked the chemistry between Billy Bob Thornton and Michael Beach. I also liked the whole interracial relationship storyline between Lila and Dale too.

The film was made by Carl Franklin, a black man. I hardly think he was "patronizing black folks." They were just characters in a movie, that's all.

That comment makes it my top 5 of the most idiotic things I've seen on IMDB! What's WRONG with you? Are you part Black? That makes it more disturbing. Do YOU NOT think there are black men with 150 IQ?! Do you NOT think there are bumbling white inept criminals?! SMH-- Would you prefer all black men be depicted as inept, illiterate buffoons? There are plenty of films like that! Find one, and get of the board of a TRUE FILM! This film flips the script, and is (grimly) realistic, yet creative and daring! That's what makes it great. You are so fugging lost! Are you high? Do you stay high?! Just asking.
