what's with the stabbing?

Why do you think Pluto's character stabbed vs using a gun? I thought it was probably a deliberate part of his character but I don't know if I quite got it.

reply

I think since his demeanor was always cool and calm, bam his can quickly and quiet hit you with the knife.

He was just a raging psychopath - plain & simple. He prefers to kill someone slowly and painfully with a blade just to see the expression on their faces.

Yeah...the knife makes it personal.

reply

If Pluto prefers to kill someone slowly and painfully with a knife to see the expressions on their faces, then why did he put pillowcases over their heads first?

reply

The pillow cases were used so that the victim would not see the knife coming towards them and would struggle less, thereby allowing Pluto to kill with one or two thrusts.

reply

I assumed they were to contain any splatter; start stabbing people in the chest and you would probably have quite a lot of bloody coughing to deal with.

Note that he doesn't cover the other victim's faces before the first stabbing, so he's not worried about them knowing what's coming. How much useful struggling can a hog-tied person do? Just enough for Pluto to enjoy it, I fear.

reply

I think he just had a fascination with knives. He's no different than some killers who prefer a .45 to a 357, or something like that; preference is all it is plain and simple.

Think of it this way....Harder to match a stab to a knife than to trace a bullet to a gun. Knives cost a dollar at Walmart. Totally disposable.
For a psychopath, it's the weapon of choice. Especially one who likes the feel of it. Remember how close he held her?

I dunno, that looked like a pretty good-quality dagger he had, not like anything sold at Wal-Mart. And then there was his fancy WW II commando-style wrist/sleeve sheath. I expect he had at least a hundred bucks tied up in that combo. Maybe 200 bucks.

As for the other aspects of "why a knife?" well, when intelligently used, a knife is not at as much of a disadvantage versus a gun as might be supposed. The key is distance, or I should say timing.

It's probably the whole repressed gay thing. He can't bring himself to plunge his pork into the pooper of another guy, so he finds another way to go in and out, in and out, in and out . . .

Violent socio/psychopaths - most are not violent, and in fact a large percentage of them are people that play roles such as CEOs for large companies - are incapable of experiencing emotions the way that most people do - headfull of bad wiring so to speak - so the act of hurting other people is a way for them to attempt to "learn" emotion, or at least mimic it. They also don't experience remorse/regret/guilt. And the knife is a very personal weapon and one that inspires considerable fear. It's why someone like Pluto can stab someone to death and sit down to eat afterward and not give it another thought. I think they did it this way, not so much to paint him as evil, but just show that he's incapable of the normal human emotions that would prevent most people from commiting such a horrendous act.

According to *some* people's statistics (depending on how you count) knives/daggers may be somewhat *more* deadly than guns in close quarters encounters.

If he shot them the gunshots would be heard. Stabbing them and muffling them keeps it quiet. Horrific but brilliant sequence though.

Agreed on all counts.
