highest quality animation in an anime film?

I watched this again on DVD today and realized how many different expressions the characters have. I think it is unrivalled in the world of anime for the amount of different expressions displayed. The animation in Akira was excellent but rather glitchy and sometimes jumpy. The animation here is impeccable and the backgrounds are sumptuously detailed. Plus it was completely drawn by hand, all the cels were hand painted with no digital inking.

Does anyone know of an anime that can rival this?

For the time, this animation is amazing, but comparing it with something modern from the same studio, like Ponyo, you can tell the difference.

That said, I'd love to see a good High-Def transfer of this on Blu-ray

The animation is still as great as it was when it first came out - the greatness is in the quality not in the number of cells they used.
