I was conflicted with this one, had to watch it in a couple of sittings, the pacing was so slow. But I'm glad I stuck with it. No one can portray a dejected child in anime as well as Takahata! (see also Grave of the Fireflies). Found myself cursing at the heartless mother and sisters, and wanting to leap into the screen to give Takeo a big big hug - related so much to her energy. I had that as a child, boundless enthusiasm that was often put down. No doubt I was a precocious brat too, but the adult me (37) looks back with a fondness for the young me constantly asking 'why' and railing against seemingly aloof distant parents.

I also love Toshio as well, love the great voice-acting - that goofy cheesy laugh at the end of each sentence. Also love the "Huuuuuuh" that Japanese kids often use in bewilderment or consternation.

being a male was probably a wall that kept me away sometimes, but by the end i was embraced in a very warm feeling of my childhood memories.

I don't agree she was a dejected child.
She was a normal child from a normal family. That is the whole of Studio Ghibli thing, especially Miyazaki's movies. All the kids portrayed are normal kids, who could be just about anyone.
Her father may seem strict, but you have to remember this is 1960s Japan. The way he treats her, the mother's submission and the way the sisters were competitive is all part of the culture. Nothing out of the ordinary.
The mother is even sweet, the father has a special attachment to Taeko as opposed to the others sisters, and the sisters clearly care for her.
