Its easily the weakest, and its a poor indication of the rest of the film. So many times i've lent this to my friends, and said 'stay with it, the first ones rubbish, but the rest are great'.
Winona Ryder was awful and so was her segment, she coasted on "hip" for 90% of her career, and the other 10% was letting Tim Burton think he would one day *beep* her. I'm glad her career as a "credible actress" is pretty much over.
Noni was great! It is one of my favorite segments in the movie! Benigni's is probably the best, but that is a matter of opinion. Winona is still very much a credible actress (have you seen A Scanner Darkly?), not to mention my favorite actress. Jim wrote the part especially to put her in the movie, and that has to say something.
I have to agree with the orignal poster, Winona was unbelievably bad in the first part of the film in my opinion. I can't be 100% if it's the dialouge or the horrific, fake manner in which she delivered it. Considering that I'm a huge fan of Jarmusch and absolutely love the NY, Paris, Rome and Helsiki segments, I'll have to say it was Winona. I was literally rolling my eyes at the screen during my second veiwing, couldn't wait for her time on the screen to come to an end.
I don't really mind her usually but she almost ruins this film, especially when LA is the first segment. Jim must have really wanted to work with her for some reason.
I agree..............i had read that this film was very good. When I first saw that segment, I thought I had been tricked. It's the worst part of any Jim Jarmusch film I have scene. Right below Cate Blanchett's part in Coffee and Cigarettes.
I have only seen: Ghost Dog, Broken Flowers, Dead Man, Coffee and Cigarettes, and this though so........I still have some to watch.
You thought the Helsinki segment was depressing? Really?
I thought it was hilarious. Maybe you have to be Finnish to find the whole thing amusing, but I thought it was such a accurate description of a Finnish character (in a highly stereotypical way) that I couldn't stop laughing at the end ("Huomenta, Aki"). Okay, the cabbie's story was sad (and somewhat believable), but the situation as a whole was simply a riot. I've never really liked Kari Väänänen, but after seeing him in this movie last night I actually have some sort of respect to him.
Whatever merit the L.A. story had was overshadowed by bad/unbelievable acting from both actresses. The dialog seemed 'forced', and Winona was definitely a mis-cast for that role.
I agree. I do not want to spoil the fun, but yes Winona Ryder IS cute and all but hey... is that all there is, c'mon... in that opening scene she is not good I think. Shaking eyelids, rolling with the eyes, I-smoke-therefore-I'm-SO-cool (I also say F_ck a lot, that's shocking AND Coo-al), chewing gum and I do not mind making noise disturbing the old lady and I am rude and clumsy (I throw with Gena Rowlands luggage but she is old equals not hip) and so nonchalant but I am cute meaning so very hip therefore fitting the Jim Jarmusch bill so complete: the Arthouse section of R&R. Sorry guys - it is outdated. And I was a huge Tom Waits fan when I was 23 and in Art School, I did see his legendary concert in the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Swordfishtrombones and all. Funny sounds and weird orchestration (Cool! Again!) yet really nice (uncool) melodies. But that cool factor wears off. For me. It is a little eh... annoying. When you're not in the incrowd. Or old.
I like Winona Ryder fine. I just didn't buy her as a working-class girl. She's got that delicate, fragile-filly look that made her unbelievable in that role. The cigarettes didn't help.
The story was pretty uninteresting too. Waste of Gena Rowlands, who deserved better.
I don't think Winona's portrayal was as much 'working-class' as it was Lesbian. Maybe this is why so many people have problems with this character. I thought the character was convincing and I am sure that there are cab drivers just like it.
I Adoreddddddddd the Winona segment! I found it sooo funny...But the best one it's definitely the second one (New York), with Helmut and Yo-Yo...the German character made me laugh practically just at looking at him..he was so touching and nice... Paris and Helsinki are both OK, but I hated the one with Benigni (Rome), really I just found him ridiculous and over-acting all the time...
Winona Ryder was trashed when the film came out, and consensus rides with the OP. But I disagree. She's far from a great actress, but fit the part well, and worked well with Gena Rowlands.

I thought that segment was great. Just watching her fidgeting around was interesting. Winona was actually the reason I picked up the DVD in the first place so...no..I have to disagree with you.
