My god, it's been 25 years! I was 16 when I saw this! Does anybody think it aged well?
I am a lioness. I will not cringe for them.

It actually told a story that was more appropriate for that time, which was the brazenness and audacity of the drug gangs from the mid 80's to the early 90's. Law enforcement was just figuring out how to deal with the crack cocaine trade and the resourcefulness of the gangs. The movie holds up as long as you frame it for that time period with no comparisons to the present. Snipes was truly at his best and has really not surpassed the Nino Brown role since.
shareI graduated high school 25 years ago today and went to San Francisco shortly after graduating, NJC was still in the theater and I watched it in a small theater in Pinole, Ca. I had been wanting to see it but never got around to it until then, wanted to see it for Ice-T and really ended up liking Snipes role. It's been one of my guilty pleasures ever since and I still watch it all the time. I think it's aged just fine, just because time has gone by it doesn't change the movie itself. If anything we've aged and the movie hasn't. I love to watch this, King of New York, Boyz in the Hood, Menace II Society, Scarface and the Godfather movies all a few times per year. I will get my DVD out just to watch the ending over and over when Nino gets his, I love the creepy eerie music that's playing. It fits perfectly for what happens in that scene. Lol I know, I'm crazy, you don't need to tell me.
shareNJC came out at the tail end of my junior year. I went to a heavily integrated high school in a (very) lower middle class area, and the impact of this movie was like a bomb going off. The soundtrack and various lines from the movie became a sort of pop cultural currency.

My high school was middle class as well but we were a lot of blue collar type of kids. We only had one black kid in the entire high school. When I saw this in the theater in California I was the only white guy in the whole theater. Lol
shareWatched it last night for the first time in like 15 years. As far as aging well, it definitely took me back to the 90's with soundtrack, haircuts and clothing styles. I was also 16 when this came out and remember kids in school singing that CMB song from the film.
shareI'm not into trends. This is a good movie to me.
