Question about the bar scene

Hi!
I watched this for the first time in years last night and enjoyed it, but I have a question. When Frank is drowning his sorrows in the bar, the camera pans around the room and on the wall are several pictures depicting disasters or miserable scenes. The first is the San Francisco earthquake (I think), then the Titanic and so on...then finally the last picture is of a man. This is obviously a gag but being British I didn't recognise him. Who is he and whats the joke with him?

It's been a while since I've seen it, but I think the picture was of Michael Dukakis? He was the Democrat party's presidential candidate in 1988 and the movie spoofs the pessimism of the Democrat party realizing that Dukakis was a poor choice in hindsight. ( He lost to the first George Bush )

Thanks for the reply, makes sense now.
Cheers bud.

Hi all! What other pictures did anyone catch at that bar? As mentioned above there was the Titanic, the San Francisco earthquake, Michael Dukakis. There was also the Hindenburg disaster, Neville Chamberlain announcing "Peace in our time" just before WWII... What else - I always think I should be able to catch more but haven't so far (after seeing the film many times).

reply

There was also Mr. Rogers

reply

The man was Michael Dukakis, who ran for the Presidency in 1988, but didn't win. He lost to the senior George Bush, and not by a stupid recount either.

reply

I seem to remember a picture of Neville Chamberlain holding the agreement he negotiated with Adolf Hitler.
