I totally agree. I miss his good movies like L.A. Story, The Jerk, Planes, Trains & Automobiles, All of Me and others. This was one of his better movies.

Sorry to go off on a little tangent, but I think the reason Steve Martin had started to do "boring family films" is because he's concentrating more on his writing. I've only read part of Shopgirl, as well as The Pleasure of My Company and Pure Drivel (both in their entirety). What I've read of his work is nothing short of amazing, especially The Pleasure of My Company, which would make a great movie for Steve Martin to get made instead of Fox trying to make "Cheaper By The Dozen 3: Over-Doze". Point being, Steve Martin is a hell of a writer, and it makes me forgive the fact that he signed onto the Cheaper movies, because at least in some form Steve Martin continues to express himself in his own special way.
Yeah, I love both of those novellas. They're so good -- I hope he comes out with more published writing soon. Shopgirl was turned into a very very good adaptation.
I agree that he should be doing more films of LA Story's quality. This is Steve Martin's best work ever, and is one of the most complicated, funny, enjoyable and inspiring films I have ever encountered. It takes several times through to get all of the levels, but each level is worth the repeated viewing. One of the best films around, ever.
I agree. I used to look forward to Steve Martin movies. Now I just roll my eyes. I think Bowfinger was his last good movie. It seems like he's forgotten about to be funny - but I'm certainly hoping that that's not the case.
He shouldn't be doing family comedies. His gift is that he is/was a comedian who was edgy but comfortable. A Man With Two Brains, All of Me, The Jerk - these movies had something weird about them and that made them enjoyable. These days he's playing it safe and it's quite disappointing.
I read an interview with him on the weekend that was conducted about two months ago. He said that there are so many good dramatic actors out there that he doesn't feel he contributes anything to Hollywood by doing serious roles. He misses the whacky gag-style comedy films and is happy to have the Pink Panther series continuing. He didn't say much about Shopgirl, but he was great in that.
I really enjoyed L.A. Story also. It is a mature comedy that is full of gags and hilarious moments. I would have loved to have seen a trilogy of this character going through life, but I guess the core of this film was love and he found love in the end.
