Scenery Superhero

The modern age is marked by an urbanization-catalyzed suburbia sprawl which creates an eccentric perspective on pedestrianism conversations (i.e., lemonade stands).

The wily and witty Steve Martin decides to capitalize on this trend in "L.A. Story" (1991) by presenting a character who seems both pensive and petulant about traffic-related ironies and serendipity spiritualism.

Martin's character seems moved and motivated by a strange billboard which sends him messages as if it is an oracle or perhaps even God. Martin's character hopes to obtain some sort of wisdom about cosmopolitan humility (if there is such a thing) from this unusual messenger and message.

Sarah Jessica Parker makes a nice turn as a quirky typical L.A. airhead who combines both charm and effervescence and turns Martin onto some sort of self-evaluative maturity, much to his own amusement, as he tries to forge a more objective relationship with a smart and self-reflective English woman who is surprisingly 'happy' living in the melee and socialite bubbliness of Hollywood-warmed Los Angeles.

This is a terrific Blu-ray especially if you are fascinated by 'cotton candy culturalism' scenery.

"L.A. Story" (1991) is a great contrast foil for the perception-nosey film "Happiness" (1998).
