Sure, the government is supposed to be "by the people and for the people," but anyone with eyes can see how it really works. There's definitely a difference between how its supposed to work and how it really works. The government does put up a facade of working for the American people but it's largely government officials and politicians working for their own best interests + the overwhelming influence of major corporations and other moneyed interests.
Can we fix this? I would like to think so, but it's been this way for years and nothing has been done about it. A big first step would be to force money out of politics and greatly reduce the power of the lobbyists.
As for the mob and keeping a secret, just remember this question: Who killed Jimmy Hoffa? No one really knows. One guy (Frank Sheeran) confessed to doing so, but his confession is doubted by multiple people who are educated on the subject, and the FBI has been unable to produce any evidence to actually tie Sheeran to the crime. So if it wasn't actually Sheeran, then who was it? It's a well-kept secret.
