Can someone please explain....

How they use songs to plan put their burglaries. I mean are the songs they use to plan them out how long the songs actually are, therefore that's how long they have, or do they use the title's of the songs to know when exactly they have to do what? I didn't quite understand this. I only found out they used these songs to help plan their burglaries on the director's commentary but I don't quite understand how they work.
Much Appreciated.

Well they calculate how long it will take to do the job (eg 4 minutes 15 seconds in total) then choose a song that is exactly that length and they both sing the song so they can time themselves.

I guess they must talk off-screen about where they should be and what they should be doing at various times throughout the song, eg I should be here at 2 minutes 12 seconds and you should be doing this at 3 minutes 30 seconds etc...

they dont talk offscreen about the timing of the song...sure tommy knows all the words, but hudson's the one who knows the exact timing of the song...he just uses it so he knows when he gets near the end of the song, he's running out of time...he just uses it to measure the length of the burgulary in general nothing more complex than that(tommy prefers to use a watch)

And with them using songs instead of a watch, adds a bit of style to what they do.

'You know when you were in prison they invented something called a watch'.
