There definitely could only be ONE.

I remember a guy i worked with was telling me that he and his friend went to see a preview of Highlander II: The Quickening simply because they were committed fans of the first film. He said they were two showings: one at 20.00hrs and then one at 22.30hrs. He said the line of people waiting for the 22.30hrs showing was trailing down the block, when all of a sudden the 20.00 crowd staggered out of the cinema and they shouted at the incoming punters 'DON'T SEE THIS MOVIE!!! ITS UTTER *beep* WORST PIECE OF CRAP EVEEEER!!!' At this he said that his mate groaned and said 'Aw no way man, this is gonna be bad!' But they went through with it anyway.
I asked him what he and his pal did after the movie ended and he said 'We went back to the cinema on the friday night after we had visited the pub and shouted to the waiting punters that Highlander II was utter *beep* and that every cinema showing it should be burn't down!!!'

I know he was a little severe in his reaction, but when i saw the film on video later on, it was a terrible story, the characters were boring, irritating, laughable and downright cheap looking, plus there was no rock n roll soundtrack like Queen in the first movie and you got the feeling that the makers were interested in forming a totally new concept (That the immortals are aliens from another planet). WRONG WRONG ohhhh WRONG!!!

I'm not disagreeing with you, but, IMO if there was no sequel, there probably wouldn't have been a series. Besides ONE good thing came out it, a line Michael Ironside says to Connor made its way into my saying list:

"Ashes to Ashes, Dust to Dust, if you don't take it out and use it, it's going to rust."

"I'll tell you what a miracle is....birth control that works."
