1991's Highlander II: The Quickening is a fun sci-fi action film. It’s just a terrible sequel. Suddenly, the immortals aren’t humans at all, but are fugitives from another planet, sent to Earth where they are immortal. In the future, an aged McLeod is confronted by an environmentalist (Virginia Madsen) who is with a group trying to disengage “The Shield”, a field that surrounds the planet to keep ultraviolet rays out. Suddenly, two other aliens show up, and McLeod fights them off, but is blown up by a tanker. When he emerges from the flames, he’s young again. Then he magically calls Ramirez back from the dead, and the two fight to save the world from the evil General Katana (Michael Ironside). It was panned heavily by critics and fans, and dismissed from canon by many. A “Renegade Cut” was eventually released, which is a better cut of the movie (now the immortals are from the future, not another planet)

They should had stay true to the original story and mythology of the original Highlander. But, I can see what they were trying to do. A "What if". What if Connor, Ramirez and the Immortals were extra terrestrials from another planet?

It's just fun. To me it's just another typical 90s futuristic action movie, at the time a lot of them seemed to be similar to one another.

I really like the idea of aliens who are immortal on earth, even thought that's never made clear why. But it is the wrong idea for a HIGHLANDER movie.

I dont think it works as an stand alone movie.

Lets pretend for a second the first movie does no exists and The Quickening is a standalone film.

Why do Aliens have Earth names? Ramirez, an Spanish name and McLeod, another evident European last name are common in other planets? Is not that something, a bit too ridiculous? That thing bugged me when I first saw the movie, and I was a kid.

Ramirez is an alien who obviously remembers everything that went on in planet Zeist, including the futuristic ship where he meets McLeod, yet he is baffled about Earth planes?

I could go on and on, on things that does not make sense without even referring to the first movie.

They wanted to do an alternate story, like what if the immortals weren't human beings and if they had all come from another world. The idea had actually came about, because Christopher Lambert really enjoyed working with Sean Connery on the 1st Highlander and had wanted to work with him again on Highlander 2. So, they came up with a new story, which allowed Connery to return. If they had done Highlander 2, not as the aliens from the planet Zeist, and done it true to the original film. Connery may had appeared as Ramirez only in flashbacks, prior to before he met Connor and began his training and was linked to this new immortal, whom Connor faced.
