Some time after the 2004 version was released, a handful of fans took scenes from all three officially-released versions, as well as the deleted scenes, and edited together a fourth version of the film that runs nearly two hours, and contains all of the new Director's Cut footage, but retained the Zeist aspect. In addition to the Director's Cut footage and deleted scenes, they also took the so-called "Fairytale Ending," and incorporated it into the ending of the film.

There already was 4 versions of Highlander 2 when they did the fan edits.

Ver 1: The Quickening (US Theatrical)
Ver 2: The Quickening (UK Theatrical)
Ver 3: Renegade Version
Ver 4: Special Edition

There were two fan edits made, not just one. One being the Extended Zeist Version which is mainly the Renegade Version with additional footage including the fairytale ending from the UK theatrical cut. The other being the Special Zeist Edition uses the 2004 Special Edition as the basis while incorporating the Zeist elements (yet drops the fairytale ending).

On top of that they also restored the 100 minute long UK theatrical cut seeing as there is no commercial release of it with original English dialogue. They did the same with the US theatrical cut but it has been released on DVD in a few countries.

I'd love to see an official DVD release of the 2004 Special Edition that retains the Zeist aspects and includes the fairytale ending.

There's no way Highlander II will ever convincingly tie in with the continuity of the first film, so the rights-holders shouldn't even try. Just embrace the Zeist. They should treat this movie as a standalone sci-fi adventure about exiled alien warriors fighting amongst themselves in the near-future. Don't even call it Highlander II, just re-title and release it as The Quickening.
