Great Timing!

Most "making of" documentaries are essentially infomercials whose release is timed to maximize the promotional value. "Hearts of Darkness" was released a dozen years after "Apocalypse Now", and this was the best possible timing for an honest examination of a film that looks better and better as the years go by. Today, "Apocolypse Now" is considered a classic. In 1980, its reputation was still burdoned by a mixture of hype and bad publicity, and the fact that Vietnam was still a fresh wound in the American psyche.
