DVD Release In United States?

Does anyone know if this is getting a DVD release in the States? I'm dying to add this film to my collection, one of my fav documentaries of all time.

reply

I honestly don't know.

I don't see why they didn't clean it up and put it on the new Apocalypse Now set.

Hopelessly in love with Uma Thurman, Maggie Gyllenhaal, and Emmy Rossum

reply

I'd be happy if they released it in any country.

reply

Apparently, Coppola and his people aren't happy with how he is portrayed in the film and are refusing to cooperated with the DVD licensing. (I got this information, by the way, from someone who knows Hickenlooper personally)

Hello fans of Hearts of Darkness. I, like everyone else, would like to see my documentary out on DVD. In fact, the Criterion Collection has offered to put it out which would be fantastic. I spoke to Francis about licensing it two years ago and was reluctant. He feels the film is not a flattering portrait of him when I assured him the picture makes him look heroic, which it does. If you want to see the film out on DVD, I would recommend that everyone write Francis a letter and tell him how great he comes across in the film. For the time being, he just doesn't want to believe it. Sincerely, George Hickenlooper

reply

Hey thanks George! I have this on video and we use it in our film study class because it shows how a real film maker puts his heart into making a movie. It touches all of the students who see it and we all see Francis as a hero in film making after watching this movie. So with that said I hope francis will attend this years Toronto film festival so that I can hopefully talk to him about releasing this masterpiece onto DVD preferably criterion. Or please give us the info we need to contact him about releasing it on DVD. THANKS!

I would love to write a letter about how heroic he looked, but I've never seen the damn thing!

Ironic that Coppola doesn't likes how he appears, considering it was his wife who was filming it.

"I believe the common character of the universe is not harmony, but hostility, chaos and murder."

Where can I find Mr. Coppola's address? If he is not proud of his film and his struggle to make it, then someone needs to tell him to stop feeling sorry for himself. Regardless of where he's at as a filmaker today, HEARTS of DARKNESS shows that he WAS a hero, and should be proud of his struggle. The documentary makes that painfully clear.

Aren't these two separate issues? Coppola won't cooperate with the dvd release but he can not stop it, correct? The reason this film is not on dvd isn't because Coppola is blocking it I don't think - that doesn't make much sense.

in my opinion, heart of darkness is many ways better than the movie it's documenting, & that's about as much praise as you can give something. a DVD release is definitely needed!

I've burned a DVD from the VHS tape that I own...

reply

Same here. Took the tape and burned a DVD. Also, preceeding the doc, a commercial for the VHS tapes of AN, and an....intresting ad for renting movies.

A little C4, knockin' at your door.

Just seen the info on the re-issue of Apocalypse and noticed STILL no 'Hearts of Darkness'... damn it, looks like I'm killing an afternoon hooking my now-defunct VHS up to the Philips and making me own. Sorry kids but looking at recent comments from Francis, this is going to be the only way I'll get to see his thing on DVD. Whst a shame...

I just bought the damned Dossier edition of "Apocalypse Now" mainly because I assumed that this'd be on it. Not only was this incredible documentary not on it, but to add insult to injury, they split the movie(s) across two discs, instead of putting one version of the film on each disc.

"Apocalypse" is a great movie, but I found the documentary far more captivating the one time I saw it on PBS -- and I've wanted it in my collection ever since (though I didn't know the name until a few minutes ago). HoD is one of those films that's always stuck with me, and I'm rather irritated that they've chosen to exclude it from the "complete" DVD release.

I've heard an underground DVD was released:

"A digitally-cleaned and remastered DVD made from a LD transfer, enhanced by the addition of an EXCLUSIVE COMMENTARY track by our media critic Piter de Vries"

I don't know whether it's legal, I suspect not. I don't have it either so I don't know if it's as good as they claim. Guess viewers took it in their own hands to produce a DVD.

There looks to be one on the way. On Amazon it is listed as a future release but no other information or release date.

How is it that Paramount was able secure the rights and release a UK vhs box set in 2000 with both apocalypse now AND hearts of darkness included?
look for it on ebay you might find it.. this boggles my mind though.

reply

I actually thought it was a copyright battle. Paramount owns the video rights but Vanguard (a small indie label) tried to release it with some of George Hickenlooper's other films (such as Picture This and Dogtown) but were stopped in the process.
