... that i saw this in the mid 80's as a kid. or was Ghidorah in another Godzilla film?

Ghidorah has been in several Godzilla films, many of them pre-dating this one. You probably saw one of those back in the 80's, although they would have been from the 60's or 70's.

Before this, King Ghidorah showed up in Ghidorah The Three-Headed Monster, Invasion of Astro Monster, Destroy All Monsters, and Godzilla vs Gigan. Maybe you saw one of those?
