Ninny/Idgie Threadgood question?

Sorry, all these years I thought Ms. Threadgood from the nursing home was Idgie and she was telling stories of her and other people of days back when she was younger. Now that I am a bit older and reading the boards I am seeing they were 2 different people? So. Who was the old lady? Was she idgies relative of some sort?

In the book, they are two separate characters. In the movie, they suggested Ninny was Idgie, by never showing Cleo, Idgie's brother Ninny says she married and with the cemetery scene.
