Hugging in The Courtroom

I really liked the movie but would they really have tried a white woman along with a black man in Alabama in the 30's? Also would Idgie and Big George have been able to hug each other in front of all those people or was that thrown in as a "feel good" Hollywood moment?

The town of Whistle Stop as portrayed in the book and film is kind of idealistic. The characters in the town treat their blacks well, and in the book openly accept Ruth and Idgie as a lesbian couple. Was it realistic? Definitely not... But it worked for the story.

Hail to the king, baby.

I thought it was a little weird but then, at the end of the book, Evelyn talks to Ninny's friend about the pictures and the friend refers to Ruth as "a friend who lived here". So I guess only some people really knew and the rest thought of them as two female friends who run business together and share the house for some reason.

I think Idgie should have given Big George a big kiss on the lips in the courtroom...heh heh.
