I don't think the movie ever said, to be honest; I've read the book, but it's been many years since I've read it. My take was that Idgie was 11/12 in the beginning, making Ruth 15-17, in the beginning. But that was my take. So roughly give years apart. But again, that's just moi.

I think the book had said something about Ruth being 20/21 or so when Idgie was 15/16.

No way was Idgie 15/16.. 11/12 sounds about right.... Her brother was probably 19 so makes sense Ruth was about 16/17... So maybe five years age difference.
