I think it's so they have the time of death, and it's also symbolic.
shareIt's an old custom, it used to be believed you had to stop everything in the house so the spirit would immediately be on their way to the hereafter and not stop to tend to anything in the house like they were still a living person. Same reason they use to cover mirrors when people died, it was believed the spirit would linger in the house if they saw their reflection and not pass on.
