The down played lesbian portrayal

I am gay myself, but I actually didn't mind the lesbian angle was downplayed to an extent. I do wish it were less ambiguous and the two main characters could kiss and show more affection than they did. However I have a feeling if this movie were made today they would focus too much on the love affair between the two women. I feel heavy handed sex scenes would be unnecessary to the story but likely would be a part of a modern adaption. I am no prude and think sex is normal and nothing to be ashamed about. However I feel not focusing on the sexual side of their relationship really allowed the deep love they had for each other to be shown in a very moving way. Romantic love between two people is so much more than sex and I love that this film was able to depict that so well, even if that was not the filmmakers intention.I often wish films with gay characters would focus less on their sexuality and more on just their human aspect. I think focusing so heavily on the sex aspect of gay relationships furthers the stereotype gays and lesbians are more "sex focused" than heterosexuals. Yes there are plenty of films out there with very sexualized straight characters but also many many films out there with straight characters whose sexual lives are not a focus of their story. Not to say all films portraying gay characters do this, but most mainstream ones you see today do (and some are still quite good, ex: Brokeback Mountain). Bottomline: This is one of my favorite films. A really great love story. Although I wish the main characters could have shown more love for each other on screen, I am glad the sexual side of their love story did not become the focus of the film. The love between these women was so much more than that and I am perfectly fine with it simply being assumed/implied that a sexual relationship existed.

For a mainstream movie in the early '90s I think it did ok. There were plenty of hints, like how crestfallen Idgie was when Ruth said she was getting married, the beecharmer picnic scene, when Idgie said she was as settled as she ever wanted to be (with Ruth), and when Buddy Jr was running for cake and ice cream after the funeral for his arm, Idgie and Ruth looked like proud parents. Also, in an interview with the director (I think), he said that the food fight scene was to substitute a lovemaking scene.

I want to do to you what Spring does to cherry trees, but in a prison way.

Re watching this now as an adult I don't know how I didn't see the lesbian innuendo in the film, nor how my parents didn't. I should tell them this is why I'm gay now hahaha.

I loved the little lake scene when Ruth kisses idgie's cheek and she just looks so love struck and sad at the same time.

I've never read the book so I didn't know there was a lesbian relationship. I've always thought there was sexual tension between the two woman. Now that I know its in the book, I'm glad they didn't portray it in the movie, only because I always thought that longing between them somewhat added to the intensity of the love they have for each other.

Exactly my thoughts! I just got done watching this movie and I was like. Oh my god they're so in love it's great. I do wish that'd been shown more but oh well. But I'm glad they didn't go the sexual route, it seems like straight people only recognize the "kinky/different sex" in homosexual relationships.
