Past and future of 'Flirting'?

Since the mid 90's, I've been a huge fan of John Duigan's "Flirting". I just recently procured a DVD copy of "The Year My Voice Broke" which I didn't find anywhere near the quality of "Flirting" (though it still had appeal).

Has anyone read (heard) whether there may be a follow-up to complete John Duigan's alleged trilogy?

If there were a 3rd film in this series, how do you think it should play out? Would you like to see a continuation of the love story between "Danny Embling" and "Thandiwe Adjewa" or would you like to see the 3rd installment as more of an "independent" story the way Flirting did not pick up on "Voice" in a more in-depth manner.

Obviously the story could not take place anytime too close to the original timeline of "Flirting" (1965) because of the actors ages (or could it?). A lot can happen in 10 or 15 years but not all is written in stone...

How would you like to see such a possible story unfold? Will Danny and Thandiwe search for and find each other again? I read a newsgroup post from many years ago where someone had suggested Danny might possibly go to Africa or even Paris to find / meet Thandiwe...

How about Thandiwe showing up at the Pub of Danny's parents (of which he might now be the proprietor. The characters would be different than before, yet unchanged but by their life experiences. Danny would still be honest, decent, polite, intellectual with integrity and credibility. Thandiwe would also be the same but more experienced and "worldly" (as she was before).

It would be interesting to read what some of you might like to see happen could this story continue...

I remember, vaguely, an interview with John Duigan around the time 'Flirting' was released (although I can't recall where, 'Empire' magazine maybe) where he talked about a projected trilogy with the third part being set in Paris during 1968. How far he ever got with that I don't know.

Is it true that Duigan had a row with Thandie Newton? Perhaps that might get in the way of a projected third part.

I suppose a third part could still be made, how old is Noah Taylor now, 30's?

If not the two films are still amongst my favourites.

he's about 36 or 37. still, i'd love to see a third part, even though it's been so long since flirting.

Interesting. I wonder if his plans fall through.

Noah is my age - 38 this year. Back when TYMVB and Flirting came out there was definatley supposed to be a third movie. I would actually like to see him meet up with Freya again - as she was his first love. I always thought it was really sad that he never saw her again either. But I guess seeing Thandewai again is another path it could go down. It would have to be set when they were older I guess - like their ages now, but in 1985 I guess.

I too would really like to see a third film to complete the trilogy. Until reading this thread I didnt realize there was another film before flirting. I must say that I loved the film. It was such a wholesome film. Everything was presented (I thought) in a realistic manner but all the while compationate and poetic. Its one of thoughs rare films which you can watch over and over again. If John Duigan ever reads this I would beg him to consider a third film. I have yet to see "The Year My Voice Broke" but I would adore the idea of Thadiwe meeting up again with Danny Embling. And for a huge bonus I WOULD bring back Noah Taylor and Thandie Newton. But if you wanted to get creative I suppose you could bring back the girl from TYMVB and have a three way romance love triangle in which Danny has to choose between the two girls. Either way I would like to see a third film.

what's the update on this?

I'd like to know the current status of the trilogy too. The Year My Voice Broke and Flirting are in the top 10 or 20 of my favorite movies of all time. I first saw Flirting on late night cable in late 1993 or sometime in 1994 and loved it. I taped it in case it was worth watching again, and I wasn't disappointed. I must have watched it at least 25 times. I finally have a dvd on its way to me through eBay. I didn't find out that it was a sequel until late 1997 or 1998 when I read an Ebert review about Flirting. He mentioned that it was a sequel to a smaller film The Year My Voice Broke. I think he wrote The Day My Voice Broke. He didn't see T.Y.M.V.B. at the time of his review of Flirting. He did mention that Duigan had planned it as a trilogy. I finally saw T.Y.M.V.B. in 1999 on basic cable (Bravo, I think) and taped it the second time in 2000. I finally bought a sealed vhs of T.Y.M.V.B. in early 2001 through eBay. I absolutely loved it too. I have a hard time picking which film I love more. I agree with the fan who watches Flirting over and over again. I feel the same way about both films. I hope Duigan makes the third film. I'd like Danny's story to be concluded. I'd like to see Freya in the film, but the films are so rooted in reality that I'm not sure if it would be believable for their reunion. The sad ending of that first film is so real. Thandie was great in Flirting, standing out as an intellectual along with Danny. It would be nice to see at least a brief encounter in the trilogy. Whatever Duigan writes and directs would be nice as long as he finishes Danny's story.

I would definitely love the third part to become reality some time soon.
While I think it would be great to bring back the girl from TYMVB, I somehow think he may have grown past her and Thandiwe is more on his mind, now. At least, that's what I read from the ending.

It'd be great if they brought back Thandie and Noah.
