I think one beautiful thing about the movie is that while avoiding the cliche of them winding up together, making for a more realistic ending, we are left with the hope that someday, they will meet again.

Only problem I had with the movie is, I never got the sense of why Nicola helps them in the end, I don't think they develop her character or show another side to her other than an annoying bitch who acts the same throughout the whole movie, wiping the dirt off her and asking her if she wants milk was better than turning her in, but I don't know if it was Kidman's poor acting or bad directing of her character that makes it not what it could have been to get that across.
Other than that, I really liked it.

Actually you do get glimpse that Nicola is a cool girl stuck in her image as the perfect girl. She wanted to let lose and do the things that Thandie did but she couldn't defy her image. She secretly loves the school's grounds man, she catches Danny and Thandie sneaking around several times and says nothing, when Thandies letter to Danny is stolen and made fun of by the other students she tells them that they are wrong for their actions and she straightens out their disagreement when Thandie thinks that Danny has betrayed her. Nicola was cool.

Yeah,you really missed that scene. Watch it again - if you haven't already.

The filmmakers do a great job explain why she would help them - it was if she was helping her self.
