'He's wearing Nikes!'

When George meets Brian forvthe first time, he freaks out a bit when he sees that he's wearing runners made by his (probably biggest) competitor, Nike.

For me the crazy part was that this professional business man, who should be well versed in dressing for business, is meeting his in-laws for the first time, comes from a well-to-do family, I can't believe he'd be wearing runners with a SUIT!!! Who, with his lifestyle and upbringing would wear runners with a suit?!
I understand it was something the writer/filmmakers put in as another reason for Georgevto takecan instant disliking to him, but it just doesn't make sense!

That's probably why George commented! It was in fact weird for him to wear sneakers with a suit. I think it was intended to show how young and out of his element Brian was.

I think we're supposed to think that George is bothered that he'd be wearing Nikes instead of Sidekicks, the brand he makes.

I know my parents would've never allowed me to go anywhere in a suit wearing a pair of tennis shoes. Anyway, I don't think it was that common. I never saw anybody wearing a nice suit and Nikes before in real life and I was born in 1986. The only other movie I can think of where it happens is Forrest Gump but I think they just did that to show that Forrest is mentally handicapped.
