Maybe the wedding was made to look over the top for comedy's sake?

I'd like to think that the creators of the movie knew what they were doing when they made it seem like, on the surface, George was the bad guy for balking at such an expensive, over the top wedding. I'm hoping that really what they were doing was trying to make the movie even funnier by showing, really, how right he was, how ridiculous the wedding was getting. Anyone agree with me? I hope that's the case and not everyone making that movie really thought that the huge cost was reasonable.

I agree completely. Although it wasn't just for comedy's sake. I think it was done to serve as an allegory for his feelings as he realizes his daughter is growing up. He initially tries to control it (by suggesting a backyard BBQ), but then realizes that he can't, and he watches it grow, almost bigger than he can believe, just like his daughter has.

It's amazing the number of people on here who seem to think the goal was to show a realistic wedding planning process and a sensible celebration
