I lived in San Francisco for 4 years and worked there for over 6, so I am REALLY critical when it comes to SF locations in the film. When I saw Julia on the Lyon Street steps I burst out, "THAT'S NOT NOB HILL, IT'S PACIFIC HEIGHTS!" The streets on Nob Hill are very narrow, and very, very steep, and there is no street called "Nob Hill". Logistically it would have been a nightmare to have filmed there. There's way too much car and pedestrian traffic. At the summit of the hill are the famous Mark Hopkins Hotel & Grace Cathedral; they can be reached by the California Street cable car. Filming on the Lyon Street steps in Pacific Heights afforded them the use of a fantastic backdrop, mansions, and a quiet area to shoot the film.
There are many streets in SF that have parts that are stairs. It's frustrating learning to drive the city and looking at a map, sure that Lyon Street will take you down to the Marina District, only to find that it stops short at the Lyon Street steps, which are flanked on one side by gorgeous mansions, and on the other by part of the Presidio and a beautiful view of the Palace of Fine Art in the Marina District. Other street stairs in SF to see are the Filbert Steps and Greenwich Steps, on the east side of Telegraph Hill. Walking DOWN them to Sansome Street is recommended. You will see the only wooden street in the entire city, Napier Lane.
