Dutch Dooley Construction

I never noticed the sign before, but Dutch is no pauper like they build him up to be. As they are coming back into Chicago, right before they get home you see the "Dutch Dooley Construction" sign. And they aren't building small fences either. Throughout the movie Doyle keeps calling him working class. I'd love to own my own successful construction company. That would make me a millionaire as it makes Dutch Dooley. He's loaded, yet so down to Earth.

I always wondered about that.
He said he drove a cement truck, so I always thought the sign was a figment of his imagination, like he was daydreaming or something like that.
If he indeed owns the company, I wouldn't call him working clasas either.

reply

He said he "used to drive a truck." I assumed that meant when he was younger. And he did say earlier in the movie that he makes a pretty good living, bringing home more than Doyle's father gives his mother.

reply

Dutch just doesn't use his wealth to belittle those around him; like Doyle's dad does.

reply

yeah Dutch has money, but because he was raised "working class" he has a better understanding of what wealth is and its not about flashy things and arrogance.

reply

After they pass the sign ... And when they arrive at Doyle's mom's house in the beat up car, Dutch tells the guy who's driving, "Stop by the office on Monday, we'll see what we can do." (or something like that)

It looked like it was a pretty major construction site. Building an office building.

I felt the whole show, Dutch could have called somebody also and had money wired. He could have rented a car. But he went thru what he did to bring Doyle back to earth.

The whole purpose here was to show that you can't judge a book by it's cover, and that success is subjective. Doyle assumed that Dutch was lower class because of how he looked and acted, but he was in fact rich and owned his own successful construction company that he built from the ground up. However, unlike Doyle and his father, Dutch doesn't feel the need to flaunt his money or impress anyone in order to feel successful. It was his hard work and determination that made him feel successful.

With this economy, Dutch Dooley Construction is probably gone.

Hahaha, yeah a few months ago I read in my local paper that a Dutch Dooley, proprietor of Dutch Dooley Construction had been involved in a murder-suicide of some sort; pretty tragic.

J/K obviously...
