Question about a particular scene...

When Doyle and Dutch are in the shelter toward the end, Doyle briefly asks, "Did you hear me talking?" to which Dutch replies, "Not much", or something to that effect. Doyle then says, "I meant it." I've never fully understood that line. Was Doyle referring to the acknowledgement he made about Dutch being his "Dad"? Or am I missing something?

reply

You understood it correctly. Dutch didn't want to embarrass Doyle by saying that he overheard him speaking so fondly of him, so he replied "Not much." Dutch then let him know that he meant what he said and it was sincere.

I thought he just meant that he wished he was with his mother right now, finally acknowledging that he did care for her and missed her. Even if he was mad at his father, he wouldn't be ready to totally write him off and start calling Dutch his dad after only knowing him a couple days.

Often times scenes end up getting deleted or cut short in the final cut of a movie. I'm thinking there might have been extended dialogue between Dutch and that lady and he might have went on to say some really nice things about Dutch after he said that was his "dad" but we never got to hear them because they ended up being edited out. I do know this movie has deleted scenes. If you watch the trailer you'll see a few.
